L&T gains 5% on hopes of winning defence contracts worth Rs 40,000 crore

Shares of Larsen & Toubro rallied nearly 5% in an otherwise flat market following news reports that the company is hopeful of bagging some six defence contracts amounting to Rs 40,000 crore.

The stock gained as much as 4.83% to Rs 1,181 in intraday trade on the BSE. The stock was the top gainer on Semsex and Nifty.

Expanding its premium speakers’ line-up, Sony India on Thursday launched the ‘MHC-V90DW’ audio system in India for Rs 65,990. ‘MHC-V90DW’ stands 170cm tall with wheels and handle bar to move it around and an open back-type cabinet, delivering an output power of 2,000 watts. The speaker comes with a gesture control feature to allow users control volume and soundtracks by waving the hand, the company said in a statement. It is also equipped with motion control enabling users to perform operations by shaking their smartphones.

A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday directed social media service providers WhatsApp and Facebook to file an affidavit in four weeks stating what data they were gathering about millions of users and whether they were sharing it with any third-party entity.

The Bench, presided by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, issued the directive in view of the recent nine-judge bench judgment that upheld the right to privacy as a fundamental one.

The state-owned telecom firm BSNL expects to start a field trial of 5G services by the end of this financial year, company's chairman and MD Anupam Shrivastava said on Thursday.

"We had interaction with Nokia last week (on 5G). Next we are going to present about our requirements after which field trail concept is there. It should start before the end of this financial year," Shrivastava told reporters today.
