National Highways Authority of India was set up by an act of the Parliament, NHAI Act, 1988 “An Act to provide for the constitution of an Authority for the development, maintenance and management of national highways and for matter connected therewith or incidental thereto”. It has been entrusted with National Highways Development Project, which alongwith other minor projects, has vested in it 50329 kms of National Highways for development, maintenance and management. Our objective is to ensure that all contract awards and procurements conform to the best industry practices with regard to transparency of process, adoption of bid criteria to ensure healthy competition in award of contracts, implementation of projects conform to best quality requirements and the highway system is maintained to ensure best user comfort and convenience.

  • The National Highways Authority of India was constituted by an act of Parliament, the National Highways Authority of India Act 1988.

  • It is responsible for the development, maintenance and management of National Highways entrusted to it and for matters connected or incidental thereto. The Authority was operationalised in Feb, 1995.

  • To meet the nation’s need for the provision and maintenance of National Highways network to global standards and to meet user’s expectations in the most time bound and cost effective manner, within the strategic policy framework set by the Government of India and thus promote economic well being asnd quality of life of the people.

  • Indian road network of 33 lakh Km is second largest in the world.

  • The National Highways have a total length of 71,772 km to serve as the arterial network of the country. The development of National Highways is the responsibility of the Government of India.

  • The Government of India has launched major initiatives to upgrade and strengthen National Highways through various phases of National Highways Development project (NHDP).

  • NHAI is the implementing agency for executing projects for which loan assistance is available from Multilateral Development Agencies like ADB and World Bank or JIBC.

  • In case of these projects, majority of the funds are transferred by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to NHAI through budgetary route and NHAI receives agency charges for executing these projects.

NHAI extends deadline for bids for 3rd tranche of highways under TOT: Chairman

NEW DELHI : The NHAI, which is eying an estimated ₹4,995 crore from monetisation of third bundle of highway assets, has extended the deadline for receiving bids by a month on demand from investors, its Chairman NN Sinha said on Friday.

It plans to monetise nine highway stretches totalling 566.27 km in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu in the third tranche under toll operate and transfer (TOT) model. Read More

NHAI seeks IITs' help in reducing costs, constructing better road
