Global carmakers to invest at least $90 billion in electric vehicles

Ford Motor Co’s plan to double its electrified vehicle spending is part of an investment tsunami in batteries and electric cars by global automakers that now totals $90 billion and is still growing, a Reuters analysis shows. That money is pouring in to a tiny sector that amounts to less than 1 percent of the 90 million vehicles sold each year and where Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc, with sales of only three models totaling just over 100,000 vehicles in 2017, was a dominant player.

After German automaker Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scandal, it is now the US auto giant Ford Motor that was accused of emissions cheating in a bid to promote its diesel engine trucks. A class action lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in Detroit in the state of Michigan, claiming Ford and German auto supplier Bosch of knowingly installing emissions-cheating software devices in 2011-2017 Ford 250 and 350 Super Duty diesel pickup trucks.

Automaker Ford India on Monday said it will increase prices of its models by up to 4 per cent from January to partially offset the impact of rising input costs.

"The price increase is necessary due to several external factors, such as frequent fluctuations in commodity prices and rising input and freight costs," Ford India Executive Director - Marketing, Sales and Service, Vinay Raina said in a statement.

New Delhi: Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd is in early talks with its partner Ford Motor Co. to procure a vehicle platform on which the Mumbai-based company aims to build an all new electric sedan, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

In lieu of this platform, Mahindra will share its affordable electric vehicle technologies with Ford, which the American company plans to use in its entry-level cars such as Figo and Aspire, these people said on condition of anonymity.
