NOVEC is no novice when it comes to electricity distribution. Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) is a member-owned utility that serves more than 130,000 residential, commercial, industrial, and government customers in northern Virginia. NOVEC receives its power supply primarily from generation and transmission utility Old Dominion Electric Cooperative. The company also markets natural gas and long-distance phone services to retail customers in Virginia and Maryland through its NOVEC Energy Solutions unit. Subsidiary NOVEC Solutions sells energy appliances. NOVEC was formed in 1983 through the merger of Prince William Electric Cooperative and Tri-County Electric Cooperative.

A company so nice they named it twice is doubling its efforts to deliver power. NRG Energy, a leading power producer with a generating capacity of about 24,500 MW (including 345 MW from renewable energy), is moving onward and upward. The vast majority of NRG's power plants are in North America, but it also has one in Australia and one in Germany. The company's global portfolio includes about 190 generation units at 47 power plants. It also markets natural gas, oil, and other commodities, and invests in district heating and cooling and alternative energy projects. Its retail unit, Reliant Energy, distributes power to more than 1.6 million residential, business, commercial, and industrial customers in Texas.

NSTAR is looking to outshine its rivals through the efficiency of its regulated electric and natural gas sales, distribution, and transmission operations. The utility holding company transmits and distributes electricity to almost 1.2 million homes and businesses through NSTAR Electric and serves some 300,000 natural gas customers in Massachusetts through NSTAR Gas. The company also markets wholesale electricity, and operates liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and storage facilities. Its NSTAR Communications unit owns about 240 miles of fiber optic network. In 2010 the company agreed to be acquired by Northeast Utilities for about $4.2 billion.

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), thankfully generates enough electricity to run a lot of air conditioners. State-run NTPC, which generates almost 29% of India's power supply, has 22 coal and gas-fired power plants and interests in four more through its SAIL Power Supply joint venture. The company's plants (including joint ventures) have a combined capacity of more than 30,240 MW and feed distribution grids throughout India; prices are determined by India's Electricity Act. NTPC also offers global power consulting and engineering and construction services. India's government owns nearly 90% of NTPC.

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) is all about is the company, with offices in the US and UK, uses a proprietary system called PowerBouy to generate electricity using the mechanical energy produced when offshore waves move the anchored buoys up and down. OPT offers a buoy system that connects to power grids as well as an autonomous one that can be used in remote locations and for tsunami monitoring, oceanographic data collection, and offshore aquaculture. Customers include the US Navy, Spanish power producer Iberdrola, and Spanish energy firm TOTAL. It has a contract with Lockheed Martin to build a large power generation system off the west coast of the US.
