NSTAR is looking to outshine its rivals through the efficiency of its regulated electric and natural gas sales, distribution, and transmission operations. The utility holding company transmits and distributes electricity to almost 1.2 million homes and businesses through NSTAR Electric and serves some 300,000 natural gas customers in Massachusetts through NSTAR Gas. The company also markets wholesale electricity, and operates liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and storage facilities. Its NSTAR Communications unit owns about 240 miles of fiber optic network. In 2010 the company agreed to be acquired by Northeast Utilities for about $4.2 billion.

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), thankfully generates enough electricity to run a lot of air conditioners. State-run NTPC, which generates almost 29% of India's power supply, has 22 coal and gas-fired power plants and interests in four more through its SAIL Power Supply joint venture. The company's plants (including joint ventures) have a combined capacity of more than 30,240 MW and feed distribution grids throughout India; prices are determined by India's Electricity Act. NTPC also offers global power consulting and engineering and construction services. India's government owns nearly 90% of NTPC.

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) is all about is the company, with offices in the US and UK, uses a proprietary system called PowerBouy to generate electricity using the mechanical energy produced when offshore waves move the anchored buoys up and down. OPT offers a buoy system that connects to power grids as well as an autonomous one that can be used in remote locations and for tsunami monitoring, oceanographic data collection, and offshore aquaculture. Customers include the US Navy, Spanish power producer Iberdrola, and Spanish energy firm TOTAL. It has a contract with Lockheed Martin to build a large power generation system off the west coast of the US.

OGE Energy is the holding company for the largest electric utility in Oklahoma, but its largest revenue producer is its energy marketing and natural gas transmission unit, OGE Energy Resources. OGE owns Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E), a public utility with almost 777,000 retail and wholesale customers in Oklahoma (including Oklahoma City) and a bit of western Arkansas. OG&E owns coal- and gas-fired power plants that generate 6,420 MW of capacity. Subsidiary Enogex operates 7,900 miles of natural gas gathering and transportation pipeline. The company also provides physical, asset, financial management services through marketing unit OGE Eenergy Resources.

Ohio Valley Electric and its subsidiary, Indiana-Kentucky Electric, generate power in the Ohio River Valley region. The company operates two coal-fired plants with collectively about 2,400 MW of generating capacity. Ohio Valley Electric's Kyger Creek Plant at Cheshire, Ohio, and Indiana-Kentucky Electric's Clifty Creek Plant at Madison, Indiana are linked by 776 miles of transmission lines. Most of Ohio Valley Electric's power goes to its shareholders, which include American Electric Power (39%), Buckeye Power Generating, LLC (18%), and Duke Energy Ohio (9%).
