Trai asks Bharti Airtel to report on segmented offers

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked Bharti Airtel to furnish details of all the segmented tariff plans that the operator has offered to its subscribers by March 25. In a letter to the country’s largest telecom operator on Thursday, Trai asked whether the operator has offered such segmented tariff plans to its customers and in which circles of the total 22 that Bharti operates in.

Trai repeats call for IBS sharing between telecom companies and tower firms

KOLKATA: The telecom regulator has stuck to its guns by reiterating to the government that telcos and tower companies should be mandated to share in-building solutions (IBS) inside residential, commercial complexes and large public places such as malls, hotels and airports, to pre-empt any exclusive contracts, boost quality of indoor mobile coverage and minimise call drops.

Trai ex-chief Rahul Khullar slams new rules on predatory pricing, terms them one-sided

Former telecom regulator Rahul Khullar has waded into the raging controversy over new rules on predatory pricing, saying they are one-sided and not fair.

The watchdog should have also stayed away from the sector’s competitive aspects, which are mostly in the domain of the Competition Commission of India, said Khullar, who was chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India from 2012 to 2015.

4G: Trai wants feedback on call quality rules

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has issued a consultation paper on whether the current rules to monitor voice quality are sufficient for fourth-generation technology (4G or LTE) networks.

It had announced the latest quality of service regulations in August last year, revising the methods for assessing of call drops. The regulator had also increased the penalty to Rs 500,000 on telecom companies for not meeting the benchmarks.

A tussle and a quick fall into a debt morass

The recent tariff order issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has triggered a fresh round of war of words between Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio and the other major service providers — Airtel, Vodafone and Idea, with the latter group alleging the sectoral regulator had distorted “the competitive landscape in favour of one operator … with deep pockets and monopolistic designs.”
