The Mahindra Group will be setting up a sector-specific Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for biotechnology, at Thane, near Mumbai. The project will involve an investment of Rs. 150 crore.The SEZ will have world class facilities on a par with those available at Mahindra World City SEZ in Chennai.

The Union government policy on SEZ, came into effect from 1st April 2000. NSEZ has 370 developed plots of varying sizes, besides nine standard design factory complexes that can accommodate one hundred forty four units. About one hundred fifteen units are occupied while 125 developed plots of small sizes (below 1000 sq. mtrs.) are available for allotment. Future expansion has been strategically planned and when implemented fully, the zone would be able to provide 224 SDF units.

Special Economic Zones were setup in the country with a view to provide an internationally competitive and hassle free environment for exports. Units may be set up in SEZ for manufacture of goods and rendering of services. It was also envisaged that some of the existing Export Processing Zones would be converted into Special Economic Zones. Accordingly, the Government has converted Export Processing zones located at Kandla and Surat (Gujarat), Cochin (Kerala), Santa Cruz (Mumbai-Maharashtra), Falta (West Bengal), Madras (Tamil Nadu), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Noida (Uttar Pradesh) into a Special Economic Zones.
