The burgeoning transport problem of Kolkata drew the attention of the city planners, the State Government and also the Government of India. It was soon realised that something had to be done and done fast to cope up with the situation. It was Dr. B.C. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, who for the first time conceived the idea in 1949 of building an Underground Railway for Kolkata to solve the problems to some extent.

Northern Railway, the Jewel Set in the Crown of Indian Railways, has embarked on the mission to vanquish distances and create its own metaphor of existence. Formally established in the year 1952, it remains the largest zone in terms of route Kilometers, even after the re-organization of the Indian Railways into 16 zones. Northern Railway now comprises of 5 Divisions-Ambala, Delhi, Ferozpur, Lucknow and Moradabad having slimmed down from 11047.43 Route Kms to 6807.90 Route Kms.

The youngest of the nine Zonal Railways in India, South Central Railway was born on October 2, 1966. In these years of committed service and path-breaking progress, South Central Railway has built a modern system of mass transport, fulfilled the aspirations of the passengers time and again, and made a mark for itself in Indian Railways.

Southern Railway, in its present form, came into existence on 14th April 1951 through the merger of the three state railways namely Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway, and the Mysore state railway.

The Institute was set up in the year 1988 at Nasik Road, Maharashtra, for imparting training to Electrical Engineers of Indian Railways and other departments involved in train-operation. It is located at Nasik Road, about 188 Kms Northeast of Mumbai.The Institute is headed by the Director. He is assisted by a team of Nine faculty members, who are having practical experience as well as technical qualifications.
