Ashok Leyland bags ₹80 crore order from Senegal

New Delhi: Hinduja flagship firm Ashok Leyland on Thursday said it has bagged an order from Senegal, an African nation, to supply 400 minibuses worth 10.06 million euros (about ₹80 crore).

This order comes from Senbus Industries, a company assembling urban buses in Dakar, the Senegalese Capital, Ashok Leyland said in a statement.

Commercial Vehicle major Ashok Leyland has posted a 7.5 per cent growth in sales during the month of April, 2019, at 13,626 units compared to 12,677 units during same month a year ago.

Domestic sales grew 10 per cent to 13,141 units during the month, compared to 11,951 units during same month last year, driven by bus and LCV growth.

Ashok Leyland has reported a two per cent drop in medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) domestic sales in February 2019 at 12,621 units as compared to 12,874 units, a year ago.

While trucks dropped by four per cent to 11,117 units from 11,577, the bus segment grew by 16 per cent to 1,504 units from 1,297 units.

Ashok Leyland, the commercial vehicle (CV) maker from the Hinduja Group, reported a 21.5 per cent decline in net profit at Rs 380.8 crore during the quarter ended December 31, 2018, as compared to Rs 484.9 crore during the same quarter of last year. Total income declined 12.3 per cent to Rs 6,346 crore.

Gopal Mahadevan, chief financial officer, said: “Cumulative growth in TIV (total industry volume) till December was 25 per cent, which is significant.

Ashok Leyland on Monday launched new variants of intermediate commercial vehicle (ICV) GURU 1010 and a medium duty vehicle (MDV) Boss 1616 and 1916.

While GURU 1010 is 10 tonne gross vehicle weight (gvw) , Boss will come in 16 and 19 tonne gvw. The company is betting on providing better profitability to the customer with the new variants by providing better operational efficiency in terms of driver comfort and fuel efficiency.

In a first in the country, Hinduja Group-owned Ashok Leyland is all set to ply 50 electric buses by May for Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL), which manages Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in the Gujarat’s biggest city.

As per the contract, Ashok Leyland would run entire fleet of electric buses for the first seven years with a provision of two years extension, said Karthick Athmanathan, head – EV & eMobility Solutions.

Ashok Leyland on Wednesday confirmed that it has bagged orders from IRT (Institute of Road Transport) Chennai, UPSRTC (Uttar Pradesh State Roadways Transport Corporation) and CTU (Chandigarh Transport Undertaking) for manufacturing a total of 2,580 buses. These orders are among the largest from state transport undertakings (STU’s) for a single OEM. All these buses are likely to be dlivered before March 2019.
