Gaylord Chemical Company manufactures just three products: dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and dimethyl sulfone. But those three chemicals go into a number of end products, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, petrochemicals, inks, and solvents, as well as in semiconductor manufacturing. The company operates a manufacturing facility and research and technology center in Louisiana and sells globally. It had been a subsidiary of Temple-Inland as a result of that company's 2002 purchase of the former Gaylord Container Company. Temple-Inland then sold Gaylord Container's chemicals business to members of that unit's management team.

General Chemical Industrial Products makes soda, but don't be tempted to take a drink. The company produces soda ash, which is a raw ingredient in the manufacture of everything from glass to soap and detergent to textiles. In 2009 private equity group American Securities paid $675 million including debt to buy General Chemical's parent company, GenTek, and its subsidiaries.

GEO Specialty Chemicals knows that many niches can add up to a lot of market. The company makes about 300 specialty chemicals for niche markets such as water treatment, wire and cable manufacturing, construction, electronics, and oil and gas production. Its specialty additives improve the properties of concrete, gypsum wallboard, and plastics. GEO also produces performance chemicals (used in water treatment) and gallium (used in semiconductors for telecommunications equipment). GEO's strategy is to buy and build -- buy companies and then grow them organically.

GeoBio Energy, Inc., a development stage company, operates as a biodiesel supply and distribution company in the United States. It is also developing proprietary technology that enables the production of biodiesel fuel on a commercial scale using green algae as feed stock.
