Empresa Energetica de Mato Grosso Sul, or Enersul, brings electricity to the farmers and ranchers of Brazil's state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Cattle ranching and other crop cultivation (sugarcane, wheat, soybeans) are the region's main industries and the company's biggest customers. Enersul distributes 1.4 million megawatts of electricity to about 640,000 residential, industrial, and commercial customers via more than 70 municipalities across the state. It generates a small percentage of its power but most comes from Eletrosul parent ELETROBRAS and other sources. Energieversorgung Weser-Ems (EWE) is a German powerhouse. Operating through some 30 subsidiaries and associated companies, EWE is a multi-service energy company primarily involved in distributing natural gas and electricity. In the past few years, however, EWE has expanded its activities to include telecommunications and information technology. EWE is Germany's fifth-largest energy company, serving more than one million electricity customers and providing about 770,000 customers with natural gas. Subsidiary EWE NaturWatt sells electricity exclusively from renewable sources. In 2008, German electricity distributor EnBW agreed to buy 26% of EWE for just more than $3 billion.

Energy Future Holdings (formerly TXU) has seen the future and it works -- powered by electricity. The company is the largest nonregulated retail electric provider in Texas (TXU Energy), with 2.1 million customers, and through its Luminant unit it has a generating capacity of more than 15,510 MW from its interests in nuclear and fossil-fueled power plants in the state. Energy Future Holdings has regulated power transmission and distribution operations through 80%-owned Oncor Electric Delivery. Oncor operates the largest regulated distribution and transmission system in Texas, providing power to more than 3.1 million electric delivery points over more than 117,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines.

Energy Northwest provides electricity to public utility districts (PUDs) and municipalities in the northwestern US. The company, which is owned by the utilities it serves, has interests in nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, and solar power generation facilities. Energy Northwest is a joint operating agency comprised of about 30 member public utilities from across the state of Washington. Its four electricity generating stations are Columbia Generating Station, Nine Canyon Wind Project, Packwood Lake Hydroelectric Project, and the White Bluffs Solar Station. The company has a total generating capacity of 1,400 MW.

First Electric Cooperative wasn't the first electric cooperative ever formed, but it was the first such entity created in its home state. The member-owned utility distributes power to more than 85,000 customers in 17 central and southeastern Arkansas counties. It also offers its members a range of energy products and value-added services, including energy efficient Marathon water heaters, surge and lightning protection equipment, and compact fluorescent light bulbs. Some 72% of the cooperative's revenues come from residential customers; commercial and industrial customers account for another 20%, and the rest comes from such sources as irrigation and street lighting.
