MidCarolina Financial likes to stay in the middle of all things financial in the Tar Heel State. The institution is the holding company for MidCarolina Bank, which has eight bank branches -- including two located in health care and long-term care facilities -- in Alamance and Guilford Counties. The bank offers standard retail products and services, such as checking and savings accounts, money market accounts, and credit and debit cards. It uses funds from deposits primarily to write real estate loans; it also writes business and consumer loans. American National Bankshares is buying MidCarolina Financial for nearly $40 million.

Middleburg Financial is the holding company for Middleburg Bank, which serves individuals and small to midsized businesses through about 10 branches in northern Virginia. The bank offers standard deposit products such as checking and savings accounts, money market and NOW accounts, CDs, and IRAs. Middleburg Bank focuses heavily on real estate lending: Commercial, agricultural, and residential mortgages account for about three-quarters of its loan portfolio; real estate construction loans add another 15%. Business and consumer installment loans round out the company's loan book.

Monarch Financial Holdings, Inc. serves the South Hampton Roads area of southeastern Virginia through Monarch Bank, Monarch Mortgage, Monarch Capital, Monarch Investment, and OBXBank. With about 10 offices, Monarch Bank offers standard services, including savings and checking accounts, IRAs, and CDS. Bank subsidiary Monarch Mortgage, formed in 2007, has about a dozen offices. Other divisions sell insurance, title, and investment products. Single-family mortgages make up the largest portion of the company's loan portfolio, which also includes commercial, construction, and land development loans. Monarch Bank division OBX Bank operates in North Carolina's Outer Banks area.

Monroe Bancorp owns Monroe Bank, which operates about 20 branches in the central part of the state. Founded in 1892, the bank provides standard products such as checking and savings accounts, CDs, and credit cards. Its lending activities consist mainly of real estate loans, including commercial and residential mortgages, construction and home equity loans, and farmland loans. The bank also provides trust, investment advisory, private banking, estate planning, and brokerage services. Old National Bancorp is buying Monroe Bancorp for more than $80 million.

National Bankshares is the holding company for National Bank of Blacksburg (National Bank for short), which serves consumers and small business in southwestern Virginia through about two dozen branches. The community bank's services include deposit accounts, credit cards, and personal and corporate trust services. Commercial mortgages, including loans secured by college housing and professional office buildings, account for more than half of National Bankshares' loan portfolio; residential mortgages make up more than a quarter. To a lesser extent, the bank also writes business, construction, and consumer loans. Another subsidiary, National Bankshares Financial Services, provides investments and insurance.
