Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is a bastion of health in the thick of tobacco country. The not-for-profit system, known as WFUBMC, comprises Wake Forest University Health Sciences (founded in 1902, includes the School of Medicine), the North Carolina Baptist Hospitals (founded in 1923, with facilities devoted to geriatrics, cancer, pediatrics, and more), and Wake Forest University Physicians. The regional system includes about 20 community hospitals and primary care offices and another 100 satellite clinics, consulting operations, and health fairs. WFUBMC offers rehabilitation, skilled nursing, home health, and a unit devoted to coordinating special services for international patients.

While its primary facility is the 250-bed Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the entire system includes nearly a dozen military health care hospitals and clinics in the Washington, DC, area. It also includes Army medical training and clinical research facilities. Walter Reed provides care to soldiers stationed in the US and wounded overseas, as well as to presidents, senators, and other officials in the nation's capital. Other facilities of Walter Reed Health Care include the Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center at nearby Fort Meade (Maryland), DeWitt Hospital at Fort Belvoir (Virginia), and the DiLorenzo TRICARE Clinic at The Pentagon.

Walton Rehabilitation Hospital provides rehabilitative care to people who have suffered catastrophic illness or injuries, primarily serving the central Savannah River area in Georgia. The hospital offers services for patients recovering from strokes, as well as brain, spinal cord, and orthopedic injuries. It also provides a pain center and independent living services. Walton Rehabilitation Hospital was founded in 1988.

Washington County Health System (WCHS) provides a wide range of medical services to patients living in western Maryland, southern Pennsylvania, and adjacent portions of West Virginia. Its flagship facility, the not-for-profit Washington County Hospital, has some 350 beds and offers acute, tertiary, and long-term care, including inpatient behavioral health services, cardiac care, obstetrics, cancer treatment, rehabilitation, and trauma care. WCHS also operates the for-profit Antietam Health Services, a provider of outpatient health care, including diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and ambulatory surgery. In addition, it provides general practice care at the Robinwood Medical Center.
