Sanford Health-MeritCare combines two Dakota health care legends: South Dakota's Sanford Health and North Dakota's MeritCare Health System. Both date back to the 1890s, and today the combined not-for-profit health care provider is one of the largest integrated health care systems in the US. It serves many rural areas in the Midwest with about 30 regional and community hospitals (housing more than 1,600 beds) in the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Its medical centers offer services in such areas as cancer, cardiology, emergency care, orthopedics, pediatrics, trauma, and women's health. Sanford Health-MeritCare also boasts expanded research and education capabilities as a result of its 2009 merger.

Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center (SBLHC) has a market share of about 44% percent in its seven-county service area in east central Illinois and an inpatient market share for Coles County of nearly 80% percent. Named after President Abraham Lincoln's stepmother, SBLHC has more than 200 beds and provides a wide range of health care services including emergency medicine, behavioral health care, surgical services, and cancer treatment. The center also offers support groups and continuing education classes. SBLHC opened its doors in 1977 and is helmed by president Gary Barnett.

Scott & White serves the health care needs of Central Texas. The health care organization is a multi-specialty physician-led organization that operates hospitals in Temple, Brenham, Killeen, Round Rock, Taylor, and Waco. It also operates some 60 regional clinics throughout the area. More than 1,100 doctors are associated with the health network. Scott & White's flagship campus in Temple has about 640 beds and includes a children's hospital, a long-term acute care hospital, and a mental health clinic. Founded in the 1890s, Scott & White is a teaching affiliate of Texas A&M University and is also engaged in medical research. Additionally, the organization owns the Scott & White Health Plan.

Scottsdale is in the middle of the desert, but it's hardly deserted. Luckily, its many residents have the likes of Scottsdale Healthcare to turn to for medical care. The not-for-profit organization serves central Arizona through three acute care hospitals that combined have roughly 835 beds. Scottsdale Healthcare also operates other campuses featuring physician offices, a cancer center, home health, and other health care services. Its Essential Touch Wellness Center and Boutique provides spa-like stress-reduction therapies. The company has a staff of some 1,400 physicians who represent more than 50 medical specialties. Scottsdale Healthcare was established in 1962 as City Hospital of Scottsdale.

Scripps Health has its medical script down pat. The not-for-profit hospital group serves the San Diego area through about a half dozen acute-care hospitals with some 1,400 beds and 20 outpatient clinic locations. The system also offers home health care and operates community outreach programs. Its hospitals, along with outpatient Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal Medical Center locations, include more than 2,600 affiliated general practice and specialty physicians. Scripps Health is affiliated with The Scripps Research Institute, which performs biomedical research. The Scripps Foundation for Medicine and Science serves as a fundraiser for both the hospital group and the research institute.
