Government-owned airline Garuda Indonesia flies passengers and cargo to more than 40 destinations, split evenly between domestic and international markets (primarily in the Asia/Pacific region). A pioneering European discount airline, Ryanair Holdings offers low-fare, no-frills air transportation via its main subsidiary, Ryanair. The carrier flies to about 150 destinations, including more than two dozen in Ireland and the UK; overall, it serves more than 25 countries throughout Europe, plus Morocco. Ryanair specializes in short-haul routes between secondary and regional airports. It operates from more than 35 bases, including airports in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden, as well as in Ireland and the UK. The carrier maintains a fleet of about 200 Boeing 737-800s. Throughout 2008 and early 2009, Ryanair launched several unsuccessful bids to acquire rival Irish airline Aer Lingus.

Airline group SAS carries passengers throughout Scandinavia -- and well beyond. Most of the company's sales come from its Scandinavian Airlines operations, which include units that operate in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, as well as Scandinavian Airlines International, which serves destinations in Europe, North America, and Asia. SAS extends its reach as a member of the global Star Alliance, a marketing and code-sharing partnership led by Lufthansa and United Airlines. (Code-sharing allows carriers to sell tickets on one another's flights and thus offer potential passengers more destinations.) Other sources of revenue include airline support businesses and stakes in other airlines.

Flying passengers back and forth, back and forth, Shuttle America provides regional service for Delta Air Lines as a Delta Connection carrier and for United Airlines under the United Express name. It also flies for Mokulele Airlines. As a regional carrier, Shuttle America connects smaller markets with its clients' major hubs. It operates mainly in the eastern half of the US with a fleet of about 40 Embraer 170 regional jets, which can carry about 70 passengers. The company was acquired in 2005 by Republic Airways Holdings, which also operates regional carriers Chautauqua Airlines and Republic Airlines. Shuttle America began operations in 1998.
