The company is a member of the Star Alliance network, which includes Lufthansa and United Airlines, and it serves as South Africa's primary international airline. Its offerings are supplemented by affiliates South African Express, which provides regional service, and SA Airlink, which operates as a feeder carrier. Subsidiary SAA Technical provides maintenance services to other airlines. The government of South Africa owns SAA, which began operations in 1934.

Spain's #2 airline (after Iberia), Spanair provides scheduled and charter passenger services within its home country and throughout Europe, as well as to selected destinations in the Americas. It operates a fleet of 60 aircraft, including MD-80 jets as well as newer models from Airbus and Boeing. Spanair offers service to additional destinations via its partners in the Star Alliance, a global airline marketing and code-sharing alliance. Spanair was a subsidiary of Scandinavian carrier (and Star Alliance member) SAS until early 2009 when SAS sold the company to a group of Spanish investors.
