BAE Submarine Solutions is a business unit of BAE SYSTEMS' naval systems program. BAE Systems Submarines is the prime contractor for the Astute class of nuclear-powered attack submarines being built for the UK Ministry of Defence. Touted as being more flexible, mobile, and stealthy than previous submarines, the Astute is also powered by an onboard nuclear power plant that requires no refueling. Submarine Solutions is also providing initial in-service support. In addition to building submarines, the unit has reactivated four Upholder-class submarines for the Canadian Navy and built the HMS Bulwark assault ship for the Royal Navy.

BAE Systems Land Systems can do battle both on land and at sea. A business unit of BAE SYSTEMS, Land Systems makes military vehicles, battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers, mobile platforms, ammunition, turreted weapons systems, bridging equipment, engineering vehicles, and naval guns and launchers. Land Systems' customers include the US Department of Defense and the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation. BAE Systems Land Systems was created in 2004 when BAE SYSTEMS combined its RO Defence unit (formerly Royal Ordnance plc) with its newly acquired Alvis subsidiary.

Bath Iron Works builds some really high-tech tubs. The company, which became a subsidiary of General Dynamics in 1995, constructs surface ships for the US Navy. BIW is the lead designer and builder for the Arleigh Burke class AEGIS guided-missile destroyer, is building the next-generation Zumwalt class DDG-1000 land attack destroyer, and is part of the team developing the LPD-17 amphibious assault ship. BIW's Surface Ship Support Center offers design and engineering, upgrade, logistics, manpower management, fleet services, and other support services. Among the largest private-sector employers in the state of Maine, BIW built its first ship for the US Navy, the gunboat "USS Machias," in the 1890s.
