US mulled over conducting first nuclear test since 1992: Report

The top intelligence agencies in the United States last week mulled over whether to conduct its first nuclear test since 1992, according to top news daily in the country.

The Washington Post revealed that a meeting took place between senior officials of national security agencies to discuss conducting a nuclear test following intelligence reports claiming that Russia and China are conducting low-yield nuclear tests.

The Wahington Post cited a senior official of the administration as saying that the administration was focused on the issue of conducting a “rapid test” in the meeting, adding that it would beneficial for the United States as it could use it as a leverage to seek a trilateral deal to regulate the arsenal of nuclear powers.

However, the meeting concluded with no agreement towards conducting the nuclear test. For the time being, other measures should be taken to tackle the threat posed by China and Russia, the officials finally decided at the meeting.

The US officials were not available for comment.
