With hope of getting a special economic zone (SEZ) in West Bengal fading away, information technology (IT) major Wipro on Thursday said it was working on an alternative plan to set up a second campus in the state.

“We are exploring newer opportunities. That chapter (SEZ) is closed,” said Rishad Premji, chief strategy officer at Wipro, on the sidelines of the Nasscom East IT Awards.

Software major Wipro Limited and Ramot, the Business Engagement Centre at Tel Aviv University, on Wednesday announced a partnership for joint research in emerging technologies.

TAU is Israel's largest institution of higher learning which is home to over 30,000 students studying in nine faculties, over 125 schools and departments across the spectrum of sciences, engineering, humanities and the arts.

Wipro on Monday said the date for issuing bonus or stock dividend to the holders of its American Depository Receipts is yet to be finalised, amid the ADRs witnessing steep fluctuations in pre-market trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

IT major Wipro today said it has reinforced security measures at all its office locations after receiving a second threat email, but there was no impact on the company's operations.

"Wipro confirms that it has received a second threatening-mail.... There is no impact on the company's operations," the company said in a statement here.

Tech giant IBM on Wednesday clarified that the company is not firing 5,000 employees and the media reports regarding the same were factually incorrect.

Business Standard on Tuesday had said the the company was laying off 5,000 employees in India, joining the league of Cognizant, Infosys and Wipro in pruning staff as the IT sector faces technology shifts towards automation, and from manning legacy system to digital and cloud..

Just six months ago, Indian companies and policy makers were grappling with a record-low exchange rate. Now, the rupee’s unexpected rebound is causing fresh problems. While the currency’s 5.6 percent jump against the dollar so far this year will help tamp down inflation, it’s posing a challenge for the earnings of India’s exporters. For information technology and drug companies already contending with an American clampdown on working visas and a wave of unfavorable inspections by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it’s another headache.

India’s Information Technology (IT) companies are in the middle of their biggest retrenchment drive. After Wipro fired over 600 staff members in March, it has now been reported that seven of the biggest companies have planned to ask at least 56,000 engineers to leave this year. That roughly amounts to 8,000 employees per company.
