Amazon India reportedly closing in on Flipkart

BENGALURU: Amazon has almost closed the gap with Flipkart's standalone sales in 2017, behind in GMV marketshare by less than 1percentage point in 2017 from 5 percentage points in 2016, as per Forrester. However, Flipkart still leads as a group with Myntra and Jabong.

While Flipkart leads in fashion and smartphones, Amazon has taken lead in categories such as appliances, consumer electronics, and more importantly, groceries, which builds platform stickiness, said Satish Meena, a senior forecast analyst at Forrester.

Amazon.com Inc’s video service will look to add more regional content in India, two company executives said, as it competes with a host of global and local players for a bigger share of a fledgling online streaming market.

In little after a year of its launch in India, Amazon’s bet on original Hindi shows and a library of films in five local languages has paid off — India is the fastest growing market for its Prime Video service, Tim Leslie, global vice-president at Amazon Prime Video, told Reuters in an interview late Saturday, on the sidelines of the India Today Conclave 2018 in Mumbai.

Bezos' fortune increased by $39.2 billion in 2017 - the largest up move in anyone's net worth recorded by Forbes last year - dethroning philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, whose net worth is calculated at $90 billion, Efe reported.

Amazon.com Inc. is in talks with big banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co. about building a checking-account-like product the online retailer could offer its customers, according to people familiar with the matter.

The effort is still in its early stages and may not come to fruition, the people said. The talks with financial firms are focused on creating a product that would appeal to younger customers and those without bank accounts.
