Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma is facing a new data challenge — some people have threatened to leak his personal data, compromising the reputation of his company One97 Communications.

Three of the mobile wallet’s employees, including Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sharma’s secretary, were arrested on Monday by the Noida police for allegedly trying to extort Rs 200 million by threatening to leak his personal data.

One97 Communications-backed Paytm on Sunday announced that PayPay Corporation, its joint venture between SoftBank Corp and Yahoo Japan Corporation, has launched PayPay, a smartphone-based settlement service in Japan.

It is built around the QR-technology from Paytm that has over 300 million customers and over 9.5 million offline merchants. SoftBank is utilising Paytm’s technology and expertise in mobile payments.

New Delhi: Paytm Money, the wealth management unit of One97 Communications Ltd., on Wednesday said it had appointed former executive director of Central Depository Services Ltd. (CSDL India) Cyrus Khambata to its board of directors.

Khambata, considered an industry veteran in capital markets, has previously served as the managing director of CDSL Ventures and CDSL Insurance Depository.

Noida-based Paytm has begun testing a facial recognition tool that can unlock its payments application on a customer’s smartphone, company executives said. It also plans to extend this feature to allow customers to pay at merchant outlets with the blink of an eye.

Paytm’s investment platform Paytm Money will likely help small town people get on board the mutual fund bandwagon, and further boost inflows for the asset management industry already flourishing due to shifting habits towards financialisation of savings. Paytm Money is looking to garner huge traction from the hinterlands by making it easier to invest, where mutual fund penetration is currently low, say experts.

One97 Communications, which owns fintech major Paytm, had an almost 80 per cent increase in its losses during 2017-18, amounting to Rs 16 billion.

This was on the back of massive expansion plans for its payments bank, online marketplace Paytm Mall and a new mutual fund (MF) business, Paytm Money, according to the company’s annual report.

Heaping praises on HDFC Bank CEO, Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma said that he hoped to acquire just 10% of Aditya Puri’s cast banking knowledge. “I think HDFC is the defining bank of this country. No other bank has lead the space for so many decades. Mr Puri is the most jovial banker I know, talking to him is like learning life lessons beyond financial lessons. I wish I learn just 10% of banking from him, as much he knows,” Vijay Shekhar Sharma told in an interview to ET Now.
