Dyno Nobel Inc. is the North American unit of explosives maker Dyno Nobel. The company, which operates more than 50 manufacturing and distribution facilities throughout the continent, is North America's leading supplier of explosives. Primary customers include mining, construction, and industrial quarry companies. Its former parent company, the Norwegian private equity firm Industrie Kapital, divided the parent company in 2005 and sold the Australian and North American operations to Macquarie Bank. Rival Orica acquired the other operations. Dyno Nobel remains the world's second-largest explosives producer behind Orica, though it was acquired by Australian agrochem maker Incitec Pivot in 2008.

Dyno Nobel has exploded and landed down under. Formerly based in Norway, Dyno Nobel was founded in 1865 by an associate of Swedish dynamite inventor and prize giver Alfred Nobel. The company makes explosives at more than 65 manufacturing and distribution facilities in Australia and North America. It sells to mining, construction, and industrial quarry companies, among other industries. Once split into four geographic segments (Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa, Latin America, and North America), Dyno Nobel was restructured in 2005. Three years later, Australian agrochem maker Incitec Pivot bought Dyno Nobel for about $3 billion.

In the beginning it wanted to blow you away, now E.I. du Pont Canada Company is happy just to keep you clean, well fed, and safe from harm. The company, a subsidiary of chemicals behemoth E. I. du Pont de Nemours, has roots in the explosives industry but now makes more than 3,000 products -- from cleaning solvents to crop-protection chemicals to Kevlar (used in protective gloves, bullet-proof vests, and tires). Its products are sold worldwide and include brand names like Corian, Sorona, and Teflon. Subsidiary DuPont Liquid Packaging Systems (formerly called Liqui-Box) manufactures the packaging for boxed wine (among other, less-intoxicating products).

Effective technology has helped EFTEC market its products. Founded in 1985 as a joint venture between EMS-CHEMIE and H.B. Fuller's automotive division, EFTEC manufactures sealants, adhesives, and coatings for use by OEMs in the automotove industry. The company also supplies products to the automotive after-market for repairs, and to the bus and train industries. EFTEC has locations throughout Asia, Europe, and the US (through EFTEC North America). In 2007 EMS bought out Fuller's half of the joint venture for $80 million.

It's not just nuts and bolts that hold your car together. It's also products like EFTEC North America's adhesives and sealants that are responsible for bonding together the myriad parts of an automobile. The company and its sister, EFTEC AG, provide sealants, adhesives, and coatings to the auto industry. Other operations include the manufacture of mineral wool, waxes, PVC products, and elastomers. EFTEC North America's customers include Audi, General Motors, and Mercedes-Benz. The two EFTECs existed as a joint venture between EMS-CHEMIE and H.B. Fuller until 2007 when EMS bought out Fuller's portion of the JV.
