New Braunfels Utilities is its namesake city's most powerful entity. The utility provides electric, water, and sewage services to New Braunfels, Texas, and nearby communities. Its electric system serves more than 28,200 customers via 700 miles of overhead and underground distribution lines. New Braunfels Utilities' water and sewer systems serve more than 21,600 water and almost 20,000 wastewater customers. The water system operates six groundwater wells over the Edwards Aquifer, as well as an 8 million gallon per day surface water plant on the Guadalupe River. The utility provides electricity to about 80,000 residential and business customers (who are also member-owners of the cooperative) in 115 New Hampshire towns and cities. The enterprise operates 5,400 miles of distribution lines, and is seeking to become a complete energy solutions organization, offering energy saving options such as equipment retrofits at local schools and selling energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. Most of New Hampshire Electric Cooperative's revenues comes from residential customers, and the balance form small businesses.

New York Independent System Operator (New York ISO). The company, which replaced the New York Power Pool, manages and monitors wholesale activities on the state's transmission grid, which consists of some 11,000 miles of high-voltage lines. The New York ISO is charged with providing fair access to the state's competitive wholesale power market (37,400 MW of generating capacity), while ensuring the reliable, efficient, and safe delivery of power to New York's more than 19 million residents. The not-for-profit company is governed by a 10-person board of directors.

North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation (NCEMC) generates and transmits electricity to the state's 26 electric cooperatives in 93 of North Carolina's 100 counties. The co-op owns more than 600 MW of generating capacity through four primarily natural gas peak load generators, plus a 62% stake in Catawba Nuclear Station Unit 1, and a 31% stake in the common facilities of the Catawba Nuclear Station in South Carolina. It also buys power from Progress Energy, American Electric Power, and other for-profit utilities. NCEMC's member cooperatives serve more than 950,000 businesses and homes in North Carolina. The wholesale co-op also operates an energy operations center.

NOVEC is no novice when it comes to electricity distribution. Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) is a member-owned utility that serves more than 130,000 residential, commercial, industrial, and government customers in northern Virginia. NOVEC receives its power supply primarily from generation and transmission utility Old Dominion Electric Cooperative. The company also markets natural gas and long-distance phone services to retail customers in Virginia and Maryland through its NOVEC Energy Solutions unit. Subsidiary NOVEC Solutions sells energy appliances. NOVEC was formed in 1983 through the merger of Prince William Electric Cooperative and Tri-County Electric Cooperative.
