Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association supplies wholesale electricity to 44 rural distribution utilities that serve about 1.5 million customers (more than 599,300 meters) in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming (New Mexico was a late addition to the association's service region). The member-owned cooperative has a generating capacity of 3,840 MW from its interests primarily in fossil-fueled power plants, and it operates 5,270 miles of transmission lines. Tri-State Generation and Transmission also purchases power and sells its excess supply to other utilities.

Staying true to its more-than-a-century-old watery origins, Turlock Irrigation District (TID) provides irrigation services to almost 6,000 farmers in its service area (150,000 acres of farmland). The company also provides electric generation, transmission, and distribution services to more than 98,000 retail customers in and around Turlock, California, and it sells power to wholesale customers. TID became a generator and distributor of electricity in 1923. The district provides electric service to its customer base in a 662-sq.-ml. service area encompassing portions of Merced, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties.

UIL Holdings, parent of electric utility The United Illuminating Company (UI), hopes its well regulated business will result in regular revenue growth. The public utility distributes electricity to 325,000 customers in southwestern Connecticut. Its service area, largely urban and suburban, includes the principal cities of Bridgeport (population 137,000) and New Haven (population 124,000) and their surrounding areas. UIL Holdings has teamed up with NRG Energy to form GenConn Energy LLC, a joint venture that focuses on developing new power generation facilities in Connecticut. In 2010 the company acquired three gas utilies in New England from IBERDROLA USA for $1.3 billion.

UniSource Energy has more than one source of income, but it gets most of its revenues from its energy utilities. The company's Tucson Electric Power unit generates and distributes electricity to almost 402,000 customers in southeastern Arizona. The unit has about 2,230 MW of generating capacity. Subsidiary UniSource Energy Services provides electricity (through UNS Electric Services) to 90,000 customers and natural gas (through UNS Gas) to 146,000 customers in 30 communities in northern and southern areas of the state. UniSource's Millennium Energy Holdings unit invests in unregulated energy and emerging technology companies.

Vattenfall, which provides power to 4.7 million retail customers in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the UK. The Nordic region's largest utility group has about 33,000 MW of generating capacity in the region from interests in nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, and fossil-fueled power plants; it also markets wholesale energy and operates district heating facilities. State-owned Vattenfall is focusing on its growing its presence across Europe. In 2009 it acquired Belgium-based Nuon (renamed Business Group Benelux) in a $10.9 billion deal, boosting its position as a major European energy group
