The utility, a subsidiary of SCANA, owns 24,500 miles of power distribution lines and more than 15,700 miles of gas transmission mains; it also operates 17 fossil-fueled, nuclear, and hydroelectric power generation facilities with 5,695 MW of capacity. Its service area covers 23,000 sq. mls.SCE&G purchases additional power from other independent generators and utility companies, including SCANA-owned affiliate South Carolina Generating, and it sells wholesale power to other utilities and marketers.

Although South Central Power Company may sound like a power plant in Watts, Los Angeles, it is in fact a member-owned cooperative that provides electricity to consumers and businesses in southern Ohio. An affiliate of the nationwide Touchstone Energy Cooperative network, the electric cooperative provides power to more than 110,000 customers over more than 11,000 miles of power lines. In addition to distributing electricity, South Central Power also provides outdoor lighting, surge suppression products, security systems, water heater switches, and other energy-related services.

Sharing power is not a threatening proposition for Southeastern Power Administration. The power distributor markets electricity generated at federal hydroelectric facilities (nearly 3,400 MW of capacity) to customers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The company's 495 preference wholesale customers (who serve more than 13 million consumers) are primarily municipal and cooperative utilities in the region. Southeastern Power Administration is an agency of the US Department of Energy, and its goal is to market electric power generated by Federal reservoir projects at the lowest possible cost to consumers.
