Erste & Steiermarkische Bank (ESB) is banking on the fiduciary habits of native Croatians. The Croatia-based bank caters to individuals and small- and medium-sized businesses through more than 120 branches; services include Internet banking for retail and corporate clients. When the bank first opened in 2002, it had few direct competitors, but today as the competitive landscape has changed, the bank's clientele have had more banking choices and have asserted their loyalty to ESB. The rapidly expanding bank, founded in 1987 as a four-branch institution by Hüsnü Özyegin, is controlled by the National Bank of Greece. The Greek bank bought more than 45% of Finansbank's stock in 2006, then raised its stake to more than 77% in 2009.

First Financial Holding Co., Ltd is the holding company for First Commercial Bank, which provides retail and commercial banking to some five million customers in Taiwan and Asia-Pacific region. Originally founded in 1899, the bank has nearly 200 domestic offices and more than 20 international offices, including one in the US. Taiwanese business loans account for about 70% of its loan portfolio; consumer loans make up the remainder. In 2007 the bank joined with European insurer Aviva to create savings and pension products provider First-Aviva. In addition to First Commercial Bank, the holding company owns First Securities, First Venture Capital, and other financial companies.
