It comprises colleges of medicine, nursing, graduate studies, and health-related professions, as well as the University Hospital of Brooklyn, a 400-bed teaching hospital that serves more than 2 million residents in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. The state-run hospital has intensive care, operating room, and emergency room units; an ambulatory care center with some 75 clinics; three satellite health centers; and a dialysis facility. The medical campus features the University Hospital, a 370-bed, tertiary-care teaching and research hospital with numerous specialty departments and clinics, including Level I trauma, burn care, cancer treatment, AIDS care, diabetes treatment, neurosurgery, and pediatric centers. It also conducts community health outreach programs. As part of the State University of New York (SUNY), the medical complex also comprises four professional colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, and Graduate Studies), an extensive Health Sciences Library, and clinical research facilities.

After being formed more than a decade ago through the merger of Sutter Health and California Healthcare System, Sutter Health now caters to residents of more than 100 communities from the Bay Area to the Central Valley.
