BSNL’s reply to Reliance Jio plans: PSU offers unlimited broadband priced less than Re 1 per GB

After Reliance created a stir in the telecom world with its aggressive data service tariff plans, priced as low as around Rs 50 for each GB, state-owned BSNL has made an offer of less than Re 1 per GB. BSNL from September 9, will put on offer “unlimited” wireline broadband priced at a monthly pack of Rs 249. The company issued a statement in which it said, “BSNL is going to launch a very cost-effective and affordable promotional unlimited Broadband plan Experience Unlimited BB 249 from September 9, 2016.” The customer after six months will be moved to another regular plan of broadband on whatever the customer chooses. This move by BSNL comes after Reliance announced that it will offer unlimited data and voice calls with Jio until the end of the year.

Chairman and MD Anupam Shrivastava said in a statement to PTI news agency that the new plan will enhance the customer experience towards wireline broadband services and attract new users. Interestingly, BSNL said that used continuously for a month, customers will be able to download as much as 300 GB of data which is remarkable at the price of Rs 249. BSNL claimed that it is offering the lowest per GB data download cost plan under broadband services in India. Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani had said that data should be ‘affordable’ and Jio rates range from Rs 25 to Rs 50 which depends on the frequency of data use. With BSNL’s aggressive pricing, the competition looks to do only good for the consumers.
