BSNL in talks with Airtel for spectrum sharing

State-run telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is likely to finalise a deal with leading telecom company Bharti Airtel by June this year for spectrum sharing in four telecom circles, BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava said on Thursday.

Srivastava said BSNL is working on sharing spectrum with Bharti Airtel in Rajasthan, UP (West), Bihar and Assam telecom circles for which it has constitued a committee to look into the feasibility aspect to ascertain if it can offer similar services to other telcos as well.

The government had last year approved the spectrum sharing norms allowing companies to share airwaves in the same band.

“Some preliminary discussions are going on at this stage. We are open to spectrum sharing with all operators but currently the discussions are taking place with Airtel,” Shrivastava said. The BSNL CMD had in January this year said that the company is in talks with Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) for network and infrastructure sharing pact largely for voice operations across all 22 telecom circles under an arrangement called intra-circle roaming.
