India exports grow 12.4 pct to $28 bn in May; trade deficit up at $11.23 bn

India's exports rose 12.4 per cent in May over the previous year - the sharpest rise in 6 months - helped by a weaker rupee, government data showed on Wednesday.

Exports in May reached $28 billion, data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed.

However, the trade deficit stood at $11.23 billion, up from $10.09 billion in April. The deficit was $19.37 billion in May 2013.

Gold imports dipped 72 per cent in May to $2.19 billion on year-on-year basis.

Exports in April had aggregated at $25.63 billion, while imports declined by 15 per cent to $35.7 billion. Healthy growth in engineering, marine and leather goods shipments had pushed export growth to 5-month high of 5.26 per cent in April.
