Infosys appoints Krish Shankar as HR head

Bengaluru: Infosys Ltd will appoint Krish Shankar, head of human resources at Philips India Ltd, as its global human resource (HR) head, a post lying vacant since April this year.

Shankar’s appointment reflects chief executive officer (CEO) Vishal Sikka’s desire to help transform the workforce at the country’s second largest software exporter, especially since Shankar has not worked in an information technology (IT) firm in his three-decade career.

Shankar is learnt to have put in his papers and is now serving his notice period. He is expected to join Infosys in October, according to a person familiar with the development.

An email sent to Shankar went unanswered.

This was only second search mandated by the Infosys board after it named Sikka as the company’s first non-founder CEO in June last year.

“Vishal and the board clearly had one mandate given to the executive search firm. We should get someone who is truly a thought leader and has helped transform the workforce. And it was not just limited to find the candidates from the IT services alone. So we are happy that Krish has decided to join,” said an executive familiar with the development.

A spokeswoman for Infosys declined to comment, while an email to Philips went unanswered.

Shankar has worked for over three decades at Eicher Tractors, Hindustan Unilever and telecom firm Bharti Airtel.

Earlier this year, Infosys undertook an organization reshuffle that saw then global HR head Srikantan Moorthy moving to a new delivery function role.

Shankar could also considered to be brought on the Infosys board in the next fiscal year as historically, Infosys has had HR heads representing on the board, said a second person familiar with the development. Both executives declined to be named for they are not authorized to speak with reporters.

For now, only Sikka and U.B. Pravin Rao, Infosys’ chief operating officer, are the two executive members on the board.

Earlier in August, Infosys appointed Richard Lobo as the head of HR of its IT services unit. Lobo and the HR heads for all the subsidiaries of Infosys, including Infosys BPO and Edgeverve, will report to Shankar.

Executive search firm Heidricks and Struggles helped Infosys in the HR search.
