Less than one-tenth of analysts have registered with Sebi so far even as the deadline for registrations ends on 31 May, 2015.

Sources said that the number of analysts registered with Sebi so far could be lower than 500 as many analysts are still sending in applications for the registration.

But with the deadline less than a week away, there could be a huge rush for applications in the last few days, industry officials said.

“Most independent analysts have taken time trying to understand the regulations and its fine-print. Then again, they have to prepare for the NISM test and wait for results before applying to Sebi. But most large firms, like ours, have already completed registrations,” said Santanu Syam, head of operations, Angel Broking.

The slow nature of registrations has been largely attributed to the test which does not distinguish between fundamental and technical analysis. Further, making the test mandatory for research analysts has deterred some of the older hands in the market.
