Two killed, over 50 houses gutted in fire at Oil India's gas well in Assam

In a tragic incident, two people died in the massive fire that broke out at the gas well of Oil India Ltd at Baghjan in Tinsukia district on Tuesday. Over 50 houses have been gutted in the massive fire.

As per reports, the deceased were the firefighters of Oil India who had gone missing after the well caught fire and their bodies were recovered on Wednesday morning. They have been identified as Durlov Gogoi and Tikeswar Gohain, assistant operators of the fire service department of the PSU.

"Their bodies were recovered from a wetland near the site. Prima facie it looks that they jumped in the water and got drowned as there is no mark of burn injury. The exact cause will be ascertained only after a post mortem," Oil India Spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

The flames continue to erupt from the gas well.

A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is present at the spot to take stock of the situation. Emergency teams from Indian Oil and firefighters have also reached the spot to control the fire.

The gas well at Baghjan has been leaking for 13 days and a team of experts from Singapore had reached on Monday to inspect the situation.

People living in nearby villages are said to be in a panic due to the fire. Since the leak started late last month, nearly 2,500 people from 650 families have been shifted to three relief camps.
