The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the Department of Telecommunications’ appeal against a Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) order that held that liabilities of past dues related to spectrum usage charges (SUC) rested only with Reliance Communications (the seller) and not the buyer of its 800 MHz spectrum, which then was Reliance Jio Infocomm.

While Reliance Jio is becoming a mass market player with its prepaid tariffs almost a third of those offered by incumbents, Vodafone Idea (VIL) and Bharti Airtel have their focus on higher-Arpu (average revenue per user) customers, and it shows in the premium charged in postpaid tariffs compared to that of Jio’s. With this, the segmentation of telecom subscribers in India is becoming clearer now as telcos seem to have fixed their allegiance to their respective customer bases.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde was on Tuesday nominated as the president of the European Central Bank, following which she announced to temporarily relinquish her responsibilities as head of IMF.

The scrip tumbled 7.60 per cent to close at ₹100.85 on the BSE. During the day, it tanked 8.47 per cent to ₹99.90.

Dismissing media reports as rumours, telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Tamil Nadu Circle on Tuesday said there is no proposal to close down the company.

In a statement issued here, the company said: "There is no proposal to close down BSNL as wrongly reported in a section of the press.

New Delhi: Unclaimed deposits in the banking system have witnessed a jump of 26.8 per cent to ₹14,578 crore in 2018, Parliament was informed on Monday.

The unclaimed deposits rose to ₹11,494 crore in 2017 from ₹8,928 crore in 2016, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
