IT giants revamp culture to attract young talent, battle start-ups

IT giants revamp culture to attract young talent, battle start-ups

India’s oldest and most distinguished IT firms are doing what would have been almost sacrilegious a few years ago – holding coding marathons to develop innovative fixes and deploying “commando” units to resolve clients’ IT woes within hours.

Infosys, Wipro and other Indian IT giants, which rose to prominence during the outsourcing boom in the 1990s and 2000s, have struggled to keep pace with mushrooming start-ups. The rate of revenue growth has more than halved since 2011-12, partly due to the emerging competition.

Wipro to set up facility for 28,000 staff in Bhubaneswar

After the Odisha government ticked off Wipro for going slow on its development centre here, the company has committed a massive expansion of the facility, which would house 28,000 employees. The software major, however, has not spelt out a timeline for implementing its ambitious expansion plan.

In a letter to the government, Wipro said it had approached the Centre for approval to be the co-developer for the special economic zone (SEZ). The matter is likely to be taken up at the next meeting of the Board of Approvals (BoA) for SEZs under Union commerce and industry ministry.

Wipro raises fixed pay in compensation

BENGALURU: Wipro has reduced the variable component in the overall compensation of junior and mid-level employees effective June. Following a path Infosys set two years ago, India's third-largest IT services company has reduced the quarterly performance linked compensation (QPLC) and increased the fixed component to bring more predictability and consistency to compensation.

Wipro raises salary 7% in step with TCS, Infosys

Wipro, India’s third-largest information technology (IT) services company, announced a salary increase for its employees largely in line with those offered by its peers. The Azim Premji-led company, which follows a June appraisal cycle, said the average increase in salary for employees located in offshore locations was in the range of seven per cent while for those in onshore locations it was two per cent.

For high-performers, the quantum of raise was substantially higher, Saurabh Govil, global head (human resources), Wipro, said in a statement.

Indian IT services companies lagging in the next big thing

Indian IT services companies lagging in the next big thing

Bengaluru: Indian IT companies are looking to build up their presence in the social, mobile, analytics and cloud (SMAC) space, but they have a long way to go to catch up with their global outsourcing peers when it comes to offering elements of these new technologies to clients.

Infosys Ltd gets 8% of its $8.7 billion revenue from offering solutions to clients in the SMAC or digital space, a relatively small percentage when compared to global outsourcing giant Accenture Plc, which gets a fifth of its $30 billion revenue from client spending in that area.

Bengaluru: The Wipro Group, which comprises listed software services company Wipro Ltd and two privately held companies, has inducted Rishad Premji, son of billionaire chairman Azim Premji, to its highest decision-making body, the group executive council (GEC).

Rishad Premji, 38, was earlier this month brought on board the GEC, which shapes strategic priorities for both the information technology (IT) and non-IT business of Bengaluru-based Wipro, said a person familiar with the development.

BENGALURU: Wipro is building an army of Unicorns that can bounce between code and design as it moves into the new world of artificial intelligence, analytics and robotics.

India's third-largest IT services company is training 20,000 employees to become what it calls Unicorns — people who have a breadth of technology knowledge to define the big picture — as the battle for highly-skilled digital workforce is getting fierce.

After launching its cognitive intelligence platform ‘Holmes’, Wipro, India’s third largest IT services company is now using this in-house innovation to automate internal functions such as helpdesk management and recruitment using what it terms as 'soft robot’ or ‘genie’. The aim is to improve efficiency by optimizing the resource utilization and reduce the costs, said K R Sanjiv, chief technology officer of the Bengaluru-based company.

All these innovations are being driven out of Wipro’s Technovation Center located at the company’s sprawling campus in Electronic City which has around 300 researchers from diverse backgrounds, including more than 30 PhDs in different specialisations.

Wipro revamps internal training framework for tech reskilling, digital push

BENGALURU: Wipro has revamped its internal training framework for employees and launched at least three technical training programmes over the past year to reskill its staff in newer areas of technology, especially digital, amid evolving customer needs in a rapidly changing technology landscape.

This is part of an organisational overhaul being undertaken at India's third largest software exporter by CEO TK Kurien with a focus on heavy automation of commoditised service lines and creating a leaner and multi-skilled workforce.

Wipro looks to better tap existing clients

Wipro Ltd is seeking to generate more revenue from existing clients by selling them cloud computing, business applications and analytics solutions, as India’s third largest software services exporter seeks to weather a downturn in demand.

Bengaluru-based Wipro’s effort to win more business from old customers follows a year in which the company’s revenue increased 7%—well below industry lobby group Nasscom’s forecast of average 12-14% growth for India’s software services industry.
