State-run telecom firm BSNL today unveiled first internet telephony service in the country that will allow users to dial any telephone number in India through its mobile app. Now BSNL customers will be able to make calls using the company’s mobile app “Wings” to any phone number in the country.

New Delhi: State-run BSNL has become the first telecom company to launch internet telephony 'Wings' after government gave its go-ahead last month to access service providers and also has introduced a first-time prepaid concept to landline billings akin to mobile services.

The PSU soft launched these services recently.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has asked the telecom regulator TRAI to allow it to issue e-bills or soft copy of phone bills to its customers as a default option, unless a subscriber specifically “opts out” of the mode and insists on a printed version. The telecom regulator is likely to come out with a discussion paper in a month or two, seeking public view on the issue of generation of soft bills by default, a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) official familiar with development told PTI.

BSNL or the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited in its new scheme marking the end of Ramadan and the auspicious occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr 2018, introduced Eid Mubarak STV 786 offer. The scheme is a prepaid pack that offers 2GB of 3G/4G data per day, unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS messages per day. The pack will be valid for 150 days from the day of recharge. Overall, the Rs 786 BSNL plan offers 300GB of data and 15,000 SMS benefits as well.

Jio Double Dhamaka offer, which was introduced yesterday, June 12, is a fresh attempt by Jio to fuel the fire in the telecom sector to keep the incumbents Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, and BSNL at bay. This offer entitles the Jio customers with additional data for free along with a discount of up to Rs 100 on all the prepaid recharge packs. The company explicitly compared its new offer with what Airtel is providing at same price points. Moreover, while Jio and Airtel are in a neck and neck contest, other players such as Vodafone, Idea, and BSNL are competently vying for the best position.

The department of telecommunications (DoT) is considering a proposal made by BSNL to infuse equity into it so that the state-run telecom operator can be allocated spectrum in the 2100 MHz band for launching 4G services to shore up its revenues. “We are considering it,” telecom minister Manoj Sinha told reporters at the sidelines of an event on the ministry’s achievement in the last four years.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday has moved the Madras High Court challenging a trial court order which discharged Kalanithi Maran, Dayanidhi Maran and seven others in the BSNL illegal telephone exchange case.

During the period between 2004 and 2007, Dayanidhi Maran had been accused of misusing his power and allegedly providing the wrong cell phone connections of Chennai BSNL to Sun Telecom, owned by his brother Kalanithi Maran.

BSNL has reportedly introduced new broadband plans to attract more customers and retain the existing ones as the onslaught by Airtel keeps growing and before Jio commercially launched the Jio Fiber broadband services in the country. The state-run telco is now offering four new broadband tiers with daily data limits with speeds of up to 20Mbps.

Loss-making, state-owned firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has requested the department of telecommunications for allocation of an additional carrier (5 MHz) spectrum in the 2100 MHz band across 19 circles so that it can provide 4G services to shore up its revenues. To boost its case, since it does not want to pay Rs 12,955 crore which is the price of the spectrum as per the latest auction determined price, BSNL has said if it is enabled to provide 4G services

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) feels a merger with MTNL will be positive for both the companies, but there are a few impediments like the latters huge debt and the difference between pay scales which need to be sorted out, a top official has said.

However, there is no specific plan on the merger in the works at present, beyond the appointment of a consultant by the Government.
