Shares of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) rose 3 per cent to Rs 1,415 in intra-day trade on Friday, extending their Wednesday gain on the BSE, even as brokerages firm maintain ‘buy’ rating on the stock after the company proposed to acquire IT firm Mindtree.

The stock is 3 per cent away from its 52-week high price of Rs 1,459 that it hit on December 21, 2018, in intra-day trade. It touched an all-time high of Rs 1,470 on February 1, 2018, on the BSE.

Even as Larsen and Toubro (L&T) on Tuesday tried to play down the nature of its move to take over technology firm Mindtree, promoters of the latter refused to budge from their stand, terming the move hostile, unprecedented, and unexplainable. They maintained that the culture of the two companies are not aligned.

Addressing newspersons on Tuesday, L&T MD & CEO SN Subrahmanyan said what they are trying to do is with pyaar (love) and will continue to look at it as something they are doing from dil (heart).

Engineering major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) on Monday mounted a hostile takeover bid for Bengaluru-headquartered Mindtree, with a multipronged strategy to buy around a 67 per cent controlling stake in the IT company for about Rs 10,733 crore.

As the first step, L&T entered into a deal to purchase the 20.32 per cent stake of Mindtree’s single-largest investor, V G Siddhartha, at Rs 980 per share in an all-cash transaction, which translates into Rs 3,269 crore.

Mumbai: Indian conglomerate Larsen & Toubro Ltd would spend up to 70 billion rupees (USD 1.02 billion) in a hostile bid to buy IT services company Mindtree Ltd, the Times of India (TOI) reported citing sources directly involved with the matter.

L&T will buy out Mindtree’s largest shareholder VG Siddhartha and companies in which he is a promoter, following which an open offer will be sent to the public shareholders of Mindtree, according to the report published on Monday.

We had downgraded L&T Infotech (LTI) post Q3FY19 results (Limited catalysts for re-rating) given client-specific issues, peak margins and near full valuation. Stock is since down ~9%, which appropriately captures our concerns. NIFTY IT index is up 4% in comparison. We also see it less likely for any stake acquisition in Mindtree, if at all, to happen from LTI’s balance sheet. As a result, we upgrade the stock to ‘Buy’, with a revised target price of rS 1,905 based on 18x FY21E EPS.

Shares of Larsen & Toubro were up 4 per cent to Rs 1,403 on the BSE on Tuesday, after the company said its power transmission & distribution business has bagged a number of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) orders in India and abroad.

At 10:43 am; L&T was the largest gainer among the frontline benchmarks, the Nifty 50 and S&P BSE Sensex. The benchmark indices were up 1.2 per cent each. A combined 2.74 million equity shares changed hands on both the exchanges.

L&T Finance Holdings on Thursday announced early closure of its bond issue following a 4.5 times oversubscription, raising a little over Rs 2,228 crore.

The issue was opened on March 6 and was scheduled to close on March 20. The base size of the issue was Rs 500 crore, with an option to retain over-subscription up to Rs 1,000 crore.

The engineering and construction company, however, did not provide the exact value of the contract; but as per its project classification, the value of the contracts were in "large" category which is in the range of Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 crore.

L&T Infotech is likely to finalise acquiring Cafe Coffee Day founder VG Siddhartha’s 20.41% stake in Mindtree as early as this week for a price close to `975/ share, which is higher than the price offered by KKR at about `925/share, a source aware of the matter told FE. Mindtree’s shares closed Tuesday’s session 1.59% down at `916.50 on the BSE.
