The biopharmaceutical firm develops cancer therapeutics based on its AvalonRx platform, which identifies compounds that would be best suited to advance in clinical drug development. Lead product AVN944, an inhibitor of hematologic (leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma) and solid tumor cancers, is an oral drug now in clinical trials. Avalon also has preclinical programs to develop inhibitors through partnerships with other drug companies. The company was acquired by Clinical Data in 2009.

AVAX Technologies company is developing vaccines created by extracting a patient's own cancer cells and chemically treating them to induce an immune system response. The technology used to create the vaccines (called AC Vaccine) is licensed from Thomas Jefferson University. AVAX's lead vaccine candidate M-Vax is intended as a post-surgical treatment for late-stage melanoma, but the company is also developing vaccine candidates to fight ovarian cancer (O-Vax) and non-small cell lung cancer (L-Vax). The company also offers contract manufacturing services to other biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Avexa discovers drugs to treat vexing ailments. The pharmaceutical and research company works on the discovery and development of drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases, specifically HIV and antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Avexa has worked on collaborative projects with Victorian College of Pharmacy, The Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, North Carolina State University, and Georgetown University, among other institutions. The company was formed in 2004 when it was spun off from Australian drug discovery and biotechnology development company Amrad. Plans to merge with drugmaker Progen Pharmaceutical were canceled in 2009.

AVIVA Biosciences develops biochips to speed drug discovery and research. The chips help researchers learn how cells interact with each and their environment which in turn helps scientists to create drugs that target those behaviors. The firm is also developing a means for isolating hard-to-detect rare cells from blood samples; this technology could be used in prenatal care, such as detecting Down syndrome in the first trimester of pregnancy. It can also be used for cancer diagnostics. Chinese life sciences company, CapitalBio, is AVIVA's primary shareholder.
