Tembec is the little mill that could -- and did. Rescued by workers from a shuttered mill in 1973, the forest products company today maintains significant operations in the US, Canada, and France. Through about 30 manufacturing facilities it produces pulp, paper, paperboard, lumber, and chemicals from the by-products of its pulping process; these products are marketed worldwide. Tembec's pulp unit, the company's largest group, accounts for more than half of sales. Operating units include the Empire Company, Fletcher Wood Solutions, Ornamental Mouldings, and Southwest Mouldings. Rubicon Forests Limited controls more than 55% of Tenon.

TerraMai is in the business of recycling; recycling wood, that is. The company supplies flooring, siding, decking, and other products made from reclaimed wood (reused or recycled wood). TerraMai seeks out reclaimed wood from around the world; the wood can come from a variety of sources such as old buildings and structures, railroad ties, fences, or wine barrels. The company then recycles the wood and sells the finished products to commercial and residential customers in the US. TerraMai has served customers including Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, and Jamba Juice. With roots that go back to 1991, the company was founded by Richard McFarland and Erika Carpenter and is headed by CEO Ken Westrick.

The Appalachian Hardwood Lumber Company processes and distributes kiln-dried hardwoods -- such as red oak, hard maple, cherry, and poplar -- to cabinet makers and manufacturers, millwork companies, pattern shops, and retail lumber yards. The company harvests the lumber from trees in the northeastern US and delivers its products throughout the country. It uses its own fleet of trucks within a six-state delivery area and also uses common carriers to ship to other regions. The Appalachian Hardwood Lumber Company also exports wood to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The Appalachian Hardwood Lumber Company was founded in 1911.

The Collins Companies makes its money by lumbering around and gathering dust -- sawdust, that is. The company operates a group of forest product divisions that include four sawmills capable of producing more than 250 million board feet of lumber annually. The group manufactures lumber, veneer logs and flooring, pine particleboard, and TruWood brand siding and trim. It harvests wood from forests in California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, using hardwood species such as ash, oak, maple, black cherry, poplar, and basswood, and softwood species including white fir, incense cedar, and three varieties of pine. The business has been family-owned since its inception in 1855.
