Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) keeps away malaise as it electrifies Malaysia. The largest power company in Southeast Asia, TNB generates two-thirds of the electricity on the Malaysian Peninsula. The company has a generating capacity of more than 11,940 MW; it also operates the national power transmission and distribution grid, which serves more than 7 million residential, industrial, and commercial customers. TenneT manages more than 2,040 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and more than 50 electrical substations. Subsidiary APX manages non-contracted wholesale energy transactions. In 2010 TenneT spent $1.1 billion to buy grid operator transpower from E.ON. In 2010 a TenneT and National Grid joint venture began laying the first section of a high-voltage cable to connect the power grids in the Netherlands and the UK.

Power and Texas come together at the Texas Municipal Power Agency, which provides electricity generation and transmission services to four municipal utilities (Bryan, Denton, Garland, and Greenville). The joint powers agency, which was created in 1975 by its member cities, owns and operates the 462-MW Gibbons Creek power plant and related transmission assets. In the wake of the oil embargo the early 1970s, the Texas Legislature created joint powers agencies that could perform all the duties of utilities except sell power to non-members. Bryan, Denton, Garland, and Greenville then formed the Texas Municipal Power Agency and harnessed locally available lignite to fuel a power generation plant.

AES is one of the world's leading independent power producers. The company has interests in more than 120 generation facilities in about 30 countries throughout the Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East that give it a combined net generating capacity of 40,300 MW. AES sells electricity to utilities and other energy marketers through wholesale contracts or on the spot market. AES also sells power directly to customers worldwide through its interests in distribution utilities, mainly in Latin America. In 2009 the company had 1,900 MW of power plants under development in four countries.

The Chugoku Electric Power Co. makes western Japan shine. The company generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to more than 5.2 million customers in the Chugoku region of western Japan. Approximately 89% of its customers are residential, and commercial and industrial customers account for the rest. The company's 110 power plants generate about 11,800 MW; traditional thermal plants generate about 65% of its power. Chugoku Electric intends to increase its use of nuclear power and is also researching alternative energy sources. In response to Japan's electricity market liberalization, the group is entering new business markets, including consulting, construction, fuel supply, and telecommunications.
