Southern Californians soak up the sun, and the energy. The latter is where Southern California Public Power Authority comes in. The power authority generates and transmits electricity for 10 municipal distribution utilities and one irrigation district in southwestern California. Members include the municipal utilities of the cities Anaheim, Burbank, Colton, Glendale, Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Riverside. The authority has interests in three power plants and three transmission projects in the western US. It is constructing a fourth generation project. Southern California Public Power Authority also provides legislative representation and cost efficiency services to its members.

Southern Company isn't just whistling Dixie. The holding company is one of the largest electricity distributors in the US. It operates regulated utilities Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, and Mississippi Power, which combined have a generating capacity of more than 42,900 MW and serve more than 4.4 million electricity customers in the southeastern US. The good ol' power company also has energy marketing operations, and it provides energy consulting and management services for businesses and institutions. Through its Southern LINC Wireless unit, it provides wireless communications services in its US utility territory; its Southern Telecom unit offers wholesale fiber-optic services.

Southern Maryland gets it power via the South Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), which distributes electricity to more than 147,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in four counties. One of the ten largest electric cooperatives in the US, the member-owned enterprise gets its wholesale power supply through its membership in ACES Power Marketing. SMECO's service area includes all of Calvert and St. Mary's counties, and parts of of Calvert and Prince George's counties. Cities covered include Hughesville, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, and White Plains.

Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency,the power provider supplies wholesale electricity to its 18 member municipal distribution utilities, which in turn distribute power to more than 109,000 retail customers. The agency's main power source is the 900 MW Sherco 3-power plant generating unit near Becker, Minnesota. Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency owns 41% of the low-sulfur Western coal fueled plant in partnership Northern States Power Company, the unit's operator. It also relies on a range of intermediate and peaking units owned by the agency's members.

Southern Nuclear Operating company, a subsidiary of Southern Company since 1990, operates six nuclear power units at three plant locations, which combined, provide about 20% of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. Southern Nuclear's Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant began commercial operation in 1977. The Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant and the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant are jointly owned by Southern Company's Georgia Power (50%), Oglethorpe Power (30%), the Municipal Electrical Authority of Georgia (18%), and the city of Dalton.
