Deutsche Postbank is claiming its post as one of Germany's leading retail banks. Spun off from postal service provider Deutsche Post in 2004, the bank offers deposits, loans and mortgages, asset management, insurance, and commercial finance, including factoring and leasing services, through more than 850 branches; it also offers some services through post office locations. The bank performs payment processing services as well, with rivals including Deutsche Bank among its biggest customers. DnB NOR ASA also owns 51% ownership interest in Bank DnB NORD AS, which offers various banking products to the retail and corporate markets in Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland. The company was founded in 1822 and is headquartered in Oslo, Norway.

DZ BANK is the central institution for some 1,000 local cooperative banks, which serve 30 million customers from a combined 12,000 branch offices across Germany. It provides administrative services for its member banks, which are also the company's owners. Additionally, DZ BANK provides corporate banking services including commercial lending for small to midsized businesses, investment banking, structured financing, and private banking. GZ-Bank and DG Bank -- Germany's primary central institutions for cooperative lenders merged in 2001 to create today's DZ BANK.

An attempt to acquire Taiwan Business Bank in 2005 broke down amid union protests.
