Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital provides health care services to residents of southwestern Georgia. Founded in 1911, the 440-bed acute-care hospital provides emergency and inpatient services, as well as cardiology, oncology, psychiatric, women's health, and pediatric specialty care. It is part of the Phoebe Putney Health System, which also includes the 25-bed Phoebe Worth Medical Center and several satellite community health centers that provide outpatient primary health, laboratory, and surgical services. PMC serves patients in eastern Kentucky with about 260 beds and 200 doctors providing a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services. PMC also operates a family practice clinic (through which it offers a family practice residency program) and a rehabilitation hospital. Its Pikeville Medical Development Corporation (PMDC) works to attract businesses to the area and foster collaborations between the hospital and the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine. PMC first opened on Christmas Day in 1924.
