In 1903, at the suggestion of Ellen White, a group of leaders from the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists went from Battle Creek, Michigan to Washington, DC in search of a new location for the denominational headquarters, a publishing house, a sanitarium, and a college. They found just what they were looking for in Takoma Park, Maryland. Ellen White contributed a part of the proceeds from the sale of the book "The Ministry of Healing" to help build the sanitarium, and Adventist HealthCare was born. Advocate BroMenn Medical Center is a 220-bed regional hospital which provides a broad range of health services to residents in Bloomington and Normal, Illinois. Along with Advocate Eureka Community Hospital, the sole 25-bed hospital in Woodford County, and regional physician groups, it is part of a network of community health services. In addition to its general hospital services, including cancer care, obstetrics, and heart care, Advocate BroMenn Medical Center includes an inpatient mental health unit. It is part of the Advocate Health Care system.

As one of the largest hospitals in the region, Lutheran General has about 620 beds and a Level I trauma center. It also includes a complete children's hospital and pediatric critical care center. Lutheran General serves as a teaching hospital and its specialized programs include oncology, cardiology, women's health, emergency medicine, and hospice care. Lutheran General is part of the Advocate Health Care network.
