uVuMobile (formerly SmartVideo Technologies) has decided that the smart money is on mobile. The company -- which provides video streaming services to the corporate, educational, and government sectors using its proprietary SmartStream technology -- has turned its attention to the mobile entertainment market. In 2005 it launched a direct- to-consumer mobile video service, delivering television and video content (including content from ABC, MSNBC, Weather Channel, and FOX Sports) to SmartPhone cellular handsets and to Wi-Fi-enabled PDA devices. Merchant banker Forté Partners owns nearly a quarter of uVuMobile.

VendTek offers a fresh take on prepaid. The company's eFresh software lets retail customers purchase prepaid wireless and long-distance phone service and reloadable debit cards through point-of-sale terminals and self-serve vending machines. Its software uses voucher or PIN numbers in place of the card, reducing the need for inventory in the retail store. Its Now Prepay division uses eFresh software to sell prepaid phone service through retail partners. VendTek sells to retailers, distributors, and service providers, focusing on the telecom and financial services markets. Customers have included Bank of America, Canada Post, Qwest, and Visa International. Privinvest Holding owns nearly one-quarter of the company.

VimpelCom has made a beeline to become a leading mobile phone service provider in Russia, and what used to be Russia. Offering its services primarily under the Bee Line brand, the company has about 90 million mobile subscribers across Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, and Georgia. It owns wireless licenses that cover 96% of the Russian population. Outside of its core service area, VimpelCom provides communications services in Cambodia and Vietnam. The company also offers fixed-line voice and broadband Internet services. VimpleCom's key shareholder are Russia's Alfa Group (which controls 44% of VimpelCom's voting stock through its Altimo unit) and a subsidiary of Norway's Telenor (36%).

Virgin Mobile is an experienced cellular phone service provider. The holding company for Virgin Mobile Telecoms offers wireless communications services to more than 3 million customers in the UK. Virgin Mobile also offers phone service in Australia, Canada, France, India, Qatar, South Africa, and the US (through Virgin Mobile USA). The company, which operates as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), does not have a cellular infrastructure of its own and provides its service through T-Mobile International. The company's phones and plans are sold at more than 4,300 UK retail locations, including Best Buy and Carphone Warehouse. Virgin Mobile is a subsidiary of Virgin Media.

Virgin Mobile USA provides voice and data wireless communications services to about 5 million subscribers across the US under on the Virgin banner and over Sprint Nextel's network. Targeting the youth market with value- oriented pricing, flexible calling plans, and stylish phones, the company offers mobile products and services intended to appeal to consumers under age 35. Virgin Mobile USA sells its phones with pre-paid and pay-as-you-go service plans through about 40,000 third-party retail stores, including Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart. Without a network to call its own, the company concentrates on sales and marketing. Virgin Mobile USA was acquired in late 2009 by Sprint Nextel for about $483 million.
