August Goetze purchased the Baltimore Chewing Gum Company five generations ago in 1895 – but don’t let the name mislead you – candy was his business. Groupe CEMOI is just the thing for French chocolate groupies. Groupe CEMOI is one of France's leading makers of chocolate confections. The company also makes molded and panned chocolates, cocoa powder, cookies and wafers, sugar confectioneries, fruit jellies, sugared almonds, marshmallow, meringues, and industrial and semi-finished food ingredients. Its products are available in supermarkets and to the foodservice and food-manufacturing industries. The company has more than a dozen production plants. CEMOI is run by the family of founder Georges Poirrier.

Etienne Guittard embarked on an arduous journey from France to America. It was during the California Gold Rush, and in just a few short years, while still in his twenties, this adventuresome Frenchman struck gold on the rough and tumble streets of early San Francisco. Etienne had brought delicious French chocolate to trade for mining supplies, but soon discovered that wealthy miners were willing to pay premium prices for this elegant treat. Etienne sailed back to Tournus, France, where he worked in his uncle's chocolate factory until he could afford to buy his own chocolate making equipment. In 1868, he returned to San Francisco and opened Guittard Chocolate on Sansome Street.

Gelatin may not seem like a very stable base, but it's the foundation of HARIBO's best-loved goodie, the gummi bear. HARIBO's Gold-Bear candies begat a myriad of chewy shapes and made it Europe's largest confectioner. In addition to its HARIBO gummi and licorice treats, the company's brands include Maoam (fruit candies), Dulcia (marshmallow confections), Bären-Schmidt brand spruchherzen (cookies decorated with icing messages), and, under license, PEZ (and its famous dispensers). Acquisitions of smaller confectioners have spread the company's manufacturing base across Europe; it exports to more than 100 countries around the globe.
