The National Library, India is the largest library in the country. It is an institution of National importance under the 'Department of Culture, Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India'. The library is designated to collect, disseminate and preserve the printed material produced in the country. The library is situated on a scenic 30 acres Belvedere Estate, in Kolkata, formerly Calcutta City.

Composed in different Indian languages and scripts, they covers religion, philosophy, systems of science, arts and literature .Preserved in materials such as birch bark, palm leaf, cloth, wood, stone and paper, they are spread all over the country and abroad in libraries, academic institutions, museums, temples, monasteries and with individuals. Some of this wealth has disappeared , while a large portion is in a state of damage and decay. India's manuscripts wealth has to be preserved and redeemed. Rabindra Bharati Museum was established in the two hundred and seventeen year old building "Jorasanko Thakurbari" on 8th May by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India. This museum can be considered as the storehouse of memoirs of Rabindranath Tagore consisting of his original paintings, photographs and other valuable documents which our country is proud of.
