Hyundai i20 Crossover images revealed: Launch on 17th

Korean carmaker Hyundai is all set to join the bandwagon of crossovers with the launch of i20 Active. The car has been in news for quite sometime and will be launching on March 17th, 2015.

Hyundai is the second largest automaker in India and has a good hold in the market, so to keep pace with the competition, it decided to launch the crossover version of its already successful hatchback – Hyundai i20 Active will compete with Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Cross Polo and Fiat Avventura.

The crossover is based on the same platform as it’s hatchback Hyundai i20 Elite. It is more sporty and muscular to look at. The headlamps look like cat’s eyes, sharper and curvier, large fog lamps while the front grille is big and wide with enough air intake.

The crossover will have the same fluidic design as is there in all the current Hyundai cars. Aluminium cladding has been fitted at the bottom to protect the car from minor damages while the alloys have a different design this time.

The tailight cluster gives graceful lighting pattern. Hyundai unlike other offerings in the class, does not provide boot-mounted spare wheel, just to give a unique sense of appeal.

The interiors of the car are in dual tone along with three spoke steering wheel with music and Bluetooth buttons attached. The top end spec is expected to have complete black finish interiors.

It also has driver height adjustable seat, climate control, cruise control, reverse parking assistance, etc. The AC vents, gear knob and music system gets orange tone, the upholstery too gets the same color stitching.

The entertainment system boasts of the same value for money features like 2-DIN audio system with radio, CD player, 1GB internal storage and also the rear AC vents which is now becoming the common feature in all premium Hyundai cars.

The car will be available in both petrol and diesel versions. The petrol engine will house the 1.2 liter 4-cylinder Kappa motor with multi point fuel injection system. It produces power of 82bhp and the maximum torque of 115Nm mated to a five speed manual gearbox.

The diesel engine is a 1.4 liters 4-cylinder motor that bulges out 88.8bhp and maximum torque of 220Nm. The car is expected to be integrated with six speed manual gearbox. There is no confirmation if any of the version of the car would come with automatic gearbox.

About the safety aspects, not much has been revealed by the company, but going as per the features in other Hyundai cars, one can assume i20 Active to have ABS and EBD in all versions along with ventilated disc and drum braking. In the base model one can expect standard safety features like three point seat belts, powerful headlamps, engine immobilizer and central locking.

The mid level trims are expected to get auto unlock, rear defoggers, rear parking sensors with camera and driver airbag. The highend may feature dual air bags, keyless entry, clutch lock, etc.

The sporty looks will come handy to Hyundai as many consumers these days prefer SUVs and Crossovers to drive around. One of the big highlights is the high ground clearance, which will save a lot of tension and jerks on the bumpy roads of India.

The car may lack out due to poor fuel efficiency because one of the factors deciding which car to buy, is undoubtedly car’s fuel economy. The price may also be a deterrent to the consumers.

The range expected is between INR 7.5 lac and INR 10.5 lac in the market. It’s just wait and watch policy till the 17th of March when Hyundai will wrap off the covers.
