JD(S) chief Deve Gowda, others elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka

Former Prime Minister and JD(S) chief HD Deve Gowda, as well as the former leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, were among the four candidates for Rajya Sabha from Karanataka who were on Friday declared elected unopposed.
The state's ruling BJP sent to Parliament two MPs - Ashok Gasti and Eranna Kadadi.
According to reports, the 87-year-old Deve Gowda agreed to rise up to the occasion since the Congress assured him support as the JD(S)' votes alone would not have been sufficient to ensure his representation.
Meanwhile, while speaking to news agency ANI, Congress' candidate Mallikargun Kharge thanked the grand old party's interim president Sonia Gandhi and party MP Rahul Gandhi.
He said, "I thank Sonia Gandhi Ji and Rahul Gandhi Ji as they have given me an opportunity to serve at Rajya Sabha for the first time."
The Janata Dal (Secular) had on Monday announced that former Prime Minister, Gowda has decided to contest the Rajya Sabha elections.
The four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, represented by Rajeev Gowda and B K Hariprasad of Congress, Prabhakar Kore of the BJP, and D Kupendra Reddy of JDS will fall vacant with their retirement later this month.

A Patanjali official and two others have been sentenced to six months in prison by a Uttarakhand court after samples of the Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Soan Papdi, a traditional sweet, failed a quality test, reported India Today.

AstraZeneca plans to build a $1.5 billion manufacturing facility in Singapore to produce a promising category of cancer-killing drugs called antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker said on Monday.
The facility, which will be the drugmaker's first end-to-end ADC production site, will be supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board. The company did not provide details on the possible financial incentives from the Singapore government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has credited the Constitution for the trajectory of his own life, asserting that even if one assumes he acts out of self-interest, his own welfare lies in the welfare of the Constitution.
In an interview with PTI, Modi rejected the opposition's claim that he intended to change the Constitution and end reservation if the BJP-led NDA wins over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha polls. It is the BJP, he stressed, which has given the maximum number of ministers from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBC backgrounds.

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday was found dead after a chopper carrying him crashed on Sunday as it was crossing mountains terrain in heavy fog on the way back, according to Iranian state media. The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials were also reportedly present in the chopper along with Raisi.
Earlier, the Iranian authorities intensified their search operation for the crashed helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi.
