Karunanidhi death: normal life affected in Cuddalore, Villupuram

Normal life came to a grinding halt in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts since early morning on Wednesday as shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained shut and vehicles kept off the roads following the death of DMKD president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi.

After the official announcement of his death came at 6.10 p.m, the State Government declared a public holiday for all government offices and educational institutions on Wednesday as a mark of respect for the departed leader.

The mourning was largely peaceful, barring stray incidents of stoning of buses in Vilupuram district. The windscreens of as many as seven buses were stoned in Tindivanam, Mailam and Vikravandi in Villupuram district.

With large contingents of police deployed across Cuddalore and Villupuram distircts to maintain public order, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents.

Private clinics remained shut and only a handful of pharmacies were open.

Motorists struggled as petrol bunks remained closed for the second consecutive day. The DMK cadre had put up portraits of Mr. Karunanidhi at various locations for people to offer floral tributes to the departed leader.
